I’ve attended church all my life. Through school I only had a few close friends and I wondered about (and was jealous of) the kids who were considered ‘cool’ just because they had expensive clothes, acted differently, or treated people harshly. I questioned whether God was necessary for happiness because these cool kids seemed happier than me; living in their materialism and putting others down.
I later discovered there’s a much greater purpose to life than these worldly pursuits, and after surrendering my life to Jesus, I realised those kids had only a temporary happiness, whereas now I live with a peace, joy and love that I never knew before. Alex, age 23, November 2011
I grew up in an atheist environment with very little support and direction. I quickly began to view the world and people very negatively, eventually losing hope. By the age of 23 I attempted suicide several times, but God had other plans for me. As I began to learn about Jesus and what he has done for me, I realised how important I am to him and how much he loves me. As a teenager I became aware that I had nothing to base my life on, that stood for nothing and that my life was pointless.
I started asking questions about the meaning of life. I struggled with Jesus and God a long time, but in the end I concluded there was no-one/nothing else in which I could completely trust my life purpose, life direction. So I committed my life to God's way.
Today, I have seen God act in my life many times and I know that whatever I can do for God it is the right thing and most satisfying thing I could be doing. Daryl, age 48, July 2011
About a year ago, I was experiencing sharp pain in my left shoulder when I lifted my hand above my shoulder height. This pain was there for a number of months. On a Sunday morning at Lifegate, I sensed the Lord leading me to lift my hands while we were singing. As I did, the pain left and since that time I have been free from pain in my left shoulder. I tried to be the type of Christian others thought I should be (or so I thought they thought!) I went to church, youth and home groups because that's what I was supposed to do. It was about pleasing others, not about God and building a relationship with Him. And then I asked God to show me that He was real, if He really cared for me the way I had heard others say that He did. And guess what, He is and He does!! God poured His love on me, told me that I was good enough just as I am and that He had been waiting patiently for me to seek Him for myself. Before I met Christ I was afraid of failure, always trying to please people, even at the expense of my own joy and truth and had no direction or anyone to look up to in my life. This caused great distress. Since meeting Jesus I tackle fear head on knowing He is with me, I'm not a peace keeper but a peace maker, speaking truth into peoples lives because I love them and not being afraid of what they might think. I grew up going to church and became a follower of Jesus at a young age. However, it wasn't until I came to Lifegate that I was challenged to let God really change my life, and was given the tools and support I needed to work through the baggage I had picked up over the years.
